The Pichler Property, Weaverville

Weaverville · Western North Carolina

Client goals

Robyn and Bruce Pichler had previously worked with Natural Scapes to create stunning feature plantings and stairways in the front yard of their beautiful Weaverville home. When they added a guest house, they faced a new challenge: how to create safe, functional access down a steep slope plagued by heavy rainwater flow and drainage issues.

Their vision was both aesthetic and practical — a solution that would complement their home's beauty while lasting for decades, not just patch the problem temporarily. Recent hurricane damage had taken out large trees, leaving exposed areas they preferred to keep private around the new guest house.

What they needed

  • Durable access to their new guest house despite steep terrain and drainage challenges
  • A long-term solution to prevent erosion and runoff
  • Evergreen screening to restore privacy after hurricane tree loss
  • Maintained access for machinery up the steep slope
  • Solutions that honor the property's aesthetic for years to come

Our approach

How we made it happen

We built a beautiful crab-orchard and flagstone staircase designed for longevity — rejecting short-term gravel fixes in favor of permanent stonework built to serve for years. Along the pathway, water-loving plants naturally absorb runoff, turning a drainage problem into an ecological asset. Behind the guest house, strategic evergreen screening restores privacy while leaving critical access routes open for future maintenance and machinery. The result is a landscape solution both practical and enduring — built to weather storms, time, and the demands of mountain living.
